Knight: Knight is a special piece because of the way it moves. Knight moves as an “L” shape meaning two squares horizontally or vertically and one square horizontally or vertically in a way to create the L shape. It moves the same way when capturing pieces as well. What makes a knight even more special is the fact that it can jump over other pieces regardless of their color.
Bishop: Bishop can move any number of squares but only diagonally. Therefore, it always stays in the same-colored square.
Queen: Queen is a powerful piece that can move any number of squares horizontally, vertically and diagonally in one straight line.
King: King moves one square horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
The most important terms you need to know in chess are check and checkmate. If a player moves a piece that would potentially capture the king, they can announce “check”. If the player moves their pieces in a way that the king cannot get away from being captured, then the player announces “checkmate” and wins the game.
Knowing how pieces move is not enough to win the game. There are certain strategies you need to know as a beginner to have successful gameplay.
The center of the board is crucial because pieces located in the center can easily access other parts of the board. Try to move your pieces in a way that will take the control of the center of the board.
Developing the pieces quickly is important to dominate the board. If you are not quick, your opponent might dominate the board and try to capture your king in a short time.
Don’t be afraid to move a piece multiple times to develop your game. Sometimes it is better to move a piece multiple times than losing a piece.
Don’t move your queen too early. It is important to keep the queen until it is absolutely necessary. If your opponent makes a mistake, then you can start attacking with your queen and dominate the board.
